Who We Are
There are a lot of people behind the great programs at CYD! Our professional team, volunteer board of directors, and youth leaders work to encourage, empower and advocate for our student participants.

Karen Bogues, CEO
Karen was hired as the Community Youth Development founding staff member in 1995, and has led CYD to regional and national recognition in the field of youth development and civic engagement. She has a bachelor’s degree in history from Western Connecticut State University, a master’s degree in administration from St. Michael’s College in Vermont, and over 24 years’ experience working with youth.
Karen is a member of the executive committee of the Community Alliance of Sarasota County, chairing the planning & outcomes workgroup and the community engagement committee. She is a graduate of the prestigious Leadership Sarasota program. She has served on the Southeastern Network of Youth & Family Services learning resource team for Community Youth Development, and has presented at national conferences for the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the YMCA of the USA, the National Network for Youth, and the Coalition of Community Foundations for Youth.
Yolanda has been with CYD since 2006. She is a graduate of Arizona State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature and a bachelor’s degree in women and gender studies. She also holds a master’s degree from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J. She has more than 14 years of experience working with youth empowerment programs.
Yolanda was born and raised in West New York, N.J. She and her husband moved to Apollo Beach in 2006 and, together with their dog baby, Gator, absolutely love the Florida life. Yolanda’s current obsessions include a slight addiction to reality shows on Bravo TV, Alex and Ani bracelets, and Olivia Pope. She’s working on rebranding herself and will now be answering all questions with “It’s been handled!”
Suriya has a J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School and a bachelor’s degree in both child psychology and sociology from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. She has joined and led international service efforts with Rotary International and Habitat for Humanity, and is an active volunteer in Sarasota County.
Suriya runs on caffeine, Swedish Fish, and adventure. There’s nothing that excites her more than watching a Green Bay Packers game, buying a plane ticket to a faraway place, attending a live concert, or losing an afternoon in a really good book.
Crystal has a bachelor’s degree in both English literature and communication sciences & disorders from the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee. She is a certified speech language pathology assistant and anticipates attending graduate school. Crystal loves animals: she has two dogs and two cats, but would have more if she could! She loves going on long bike rides with her husband and will one day live abroad.
Jasmine Akins, Coordinator of Volunteer Programs
Jasmine has a Bachelor of Science in Public Health from the University of South Florida and holds a Masters Degree in Public Health Education from Kaplan University. She is a native to Sarasota, Florida.
Jasmine loves Batman (yes, you read that correctly), can’t live without Nacho Cheese Doritos, and would be lost in a world without music. Bad jokes make her laugh harder than they should and she prides herself on knowing the name of every dinosaur to have walked this Earth. She dreams about being a stay-at-home mom to her miniature Pit Bull Mix, Augustus.
Board of Directors
The Community Youth Development Board of Directors is a group of business and community leaders who believe in the vision of empowering youth to make positive choices in all areas of their life. If you are interested in becoming involved with our board or its committees, please contact us.
Current Members of the Board
Young people who have completed CYD programs are ready to lead! We engage them as leaders for the groups that follow by preparing them to serve as trainers for future classes of STAR, SRQVolunteen or for presentations to other community groups.
SRQVolunteen Student Board
The SRQVolunteen student board brings community service opportunities to high school students throughout Sarasota County. The board, which consists of high school students, coordinates monthly service events, in partnership with local nonprofits, that serve as a way to meet and work with other area teens, assist in causes the students care about, and earn community service hours.
The board is also responsible for finding, posting and coordinating volunteer opportunities that are available to high school students.
